Went to the cinema last night to see Pirates of the Caribbean (which only opened here in the UK yesterday - not fair that we should have to wait so long after the US see things!). I had a really good time watching this movie. OK, so it's not one of the all time great classics like Casablanca, Apocalypse Now, or LOTR, but it's a damned entertaining movie all the same. - First off, Johnny Depp is outrageous as Captain Jack Sparrow. Outrageous. I could watch him all night (pause for drooling fangirl moment...). I don't think the film would work without him, despite the good performances turned in by the other actors, and the excellent special effects. - It was actually a lot funnier than I was expecting - lots of laughs, and a good atmosphere in the cinema. - Orlando does well, and handles being what amounts to being Depp's straight man with aplomb. And he does look good swordfighting. I'd like to see him in a less action-hero role sometime soon, though, to see how he would handle that. Maybe something dark. - Liked the score, too - rousing stuff (going out to obtain it this morning). - In places the plot is a little weak (but then, what can you expect from a movie based on a theme park ride??). All in all an excellent bit of fun. And Johnny Depp :-) Current Mood: horny
